Cricket does not appear to have a strong formal history in Somalia, at least not one that is easily visible through recognized governing bodies or international competition. Somalia does not appear on the ICC membership listings surfaced in this search, and I was not able to verify an official national cricket federation through reliable primary cricket sources. That strongly suggests that, if cricket exists in Somalia today, it does so on a very small scale and outside the kind of institutional framework seen in associate-member countries. In practical terms, Somalia looks less like an emerging cricket state and more like a country where the game has had little organized foothold.
Who plays cricket in Somalia
Where cricket does exist in Somalia, it is most likely tied to small urban communities, returnees, foreign workers, or people with personal links to cricket through time spent abroad. Because I could not verify an official Somalia cricket board or national-team structure from primary cricket sources, it would be wrong to describe the sport as broadly organized or nationally rooted. The more accurate reading is that Somali cricket, if present, is probably community-based and highly limited. That is a very different situation from countries where migrant communities have already built formal leagues or ICC-linked national bodies.
Cricket’s place in Somalia today
Cricket’s place in Somalia today appears extremely marginal. The absence of visible ICC recognition, public national competition, or a clearly established official governing body points to a sport with little national footprint. That does not mean nobody plays it. It means the game does not appear to have crossed into a stable public structure. So for Somalia, the honest description is a minimal one: cricket is likely present only in pockets, with little evidence of a broad competitive or institutional base.
