Cricket in Addis Ababa

Cricket in Addis Ababa is not rooted in a deep national sporting tradition in the way football and athletics are in Ethiopia. Instead, it has developed as a community-led urban sport inside the capital. Public evidence from the Embassy of India in Ethiopia shows that cricket tournaments and league activity have been organized in Addis Ababa over multiple years, including Ethiopia cricket league events in 2017 and invitational tournaments in 2023. That gives the city a modest but real cricket history built around expatriate, diplomatic, and community networks rather than long-established Ethiopian institutions.

Who plays cricket in Addis Ababa

The player base in Addis Ababa appears to be driven mainly by the city’s international communities, especially Indian and other South Asian residents, along with people connected to embassies, business networks, and local social associations. Reports of multiple Indian teams taking part in city tournaments suggest that the game is sustained by a recurring urban base rather than by one-off events. In a city that functions as both a national capital and a major diplomatic center for Africa, that kind of community-backed cricket makes sense. It is a sport carried by people with existing ties to the game who recreate it locally in the capital.

Cricket’s place in Addis Ababa today

Cricket in Addis Ababa remains small, but it is visible enough to sustain organized events and a recognizable local scene. It sits well outside Ethiopia’s mainstream sports structure, which is still dominated by football and athletics, yet the capital gives cricket something important: a concentrated international population and enough social organization to keep the sport alive. In practical terms, Addis Ababa is the Ethiopian city most likely to support cricket on a continuing basis. The sport is still community-based and limited in scale, but it clearly has a place in the city’s wider international life.
