Cricket in Brunei has older roots than many casual observers would assume. The Asian Cricket Council’s member contacts still list the Brunei Darussalam Cricket Association, and historical records show Brunei was once an ICC affiliate member. Team history pages note that Brunei’s cricket association joined the ICC in 1992, but that it was suspended in 2014 and removed in 2015. Older match references also place Brunei in regional cricket competition, including the Borneo Cup and ACC events. That means Brunei does have a cricket history, but it is one marked by administrative interruption rather than steady institutional growth.
Who plays cricket in Brunei
The social base of cricket in Brunei has traditionally been narrow and likely centered on expatriates, regional networks, and communities with long-standing links to British or wider Commonwealth sporting culture. Brunei’s small population and the sport’s limited public profile make it unlikely that cricket has ever developed into a major mass-participation game. Even so, the survival of association references and team records suggests that the sport was sustained long enough to build organized players and competition, rather than existing only as an occasional social pastime.
Cricket’s place in Brunei today
Cricket’s current place in Brunei is difficult to describe with certainty because the formal international status of the national association has been unclear since its removal from the ICC. What can be said is that Brunei has a documented cricket history and a record of organized participation, but its present structure appears weaker and less visible than that of many active associate nations. In practical terms, Brunei sits in a gray zone: it is part of the historical map of Asian cricket development, but not currently one of the sport’s stronger or clearer small-country projects.
