Cricket in Ivory Coast is a recent development rather than a deeply rooted national tradition. The ICC page for the Fédération Ivoirienne de Cricket says the federation was created in Abidjan on 23 April 2014 and became an ICC Associate Member in July 2022. That timeline matters because it places Ivory Coast among the newer recognized cricket countries, with the game growing through deliberate federation-building rather than inherited colonial-scale infrastructure. The early structure was small, beginning with just a handful of founding members and the first clubs identified as MBC-Gold-Emirates and Jeunesse.
Who plays cricket in Ivory Coast
Public ICC material suggests the sport in Ivory Coast is being built through grassroots and youth channels as much as through adult club play. The federation says it has eight senior men’s clubs, eight junior men’s clubs, eight junior girls’ clubs, four girls’ teams, four inner-city centers, and two school centers in Abidjan. ICC reporting from 2022 also highlighted a national league with eight senior men’s teams and noted efforts to grow women’s cricket. That points to a player base that is still narrow compared with football, but much broader than a purely expatriate or symbolic scene.
Cricket’s place in Ivory Coast today
Cricket remains a minor sport in Ivory Coast, but it is now easier to describe it as an organized developing game rather than an isolated curiosity. The country is listed among ICC Africa members, and ICC match coverage shows Ivory Coast appearing in regional qualifying cricket as recently as late 2024. The sport is still concentrated and still early in its growth cycle, yet the federation’s structure, school links, and women’s initiatives suggest a real development pathway. In West African terms, Ivory Coast looks like a small but serious cricket project.
