Cricket in Uzbekistan is recent, but it has advanced quickly. The Cricket Federation of Uzbekistan states that it was founded in November 2019 and began formally deploying the sport from 2020 onward. The ICC’s member page for the federation confirms that Uzbekistan is now an Associate Member and frames the federation’s purpose around youth development, athlete training, and long-term competitive progress. That timeline makes Uzbekistan one of the clearest examples of a new cricket country building structure in a short period rather than relying on older historical roots.
Who plays cricket in Uzbekistan
The social base of Uzbek cricket appears to be growing through organized clubs, students, and urban participation, especially around Tashkent and other population centers. CricHeroes listings for the Cricket Federation of Uzbekistan include multiple teams from Tashkent and beyond, while tournament records for the Uzbekistan T20 Cricket Open Championship show that structured domestic activity is already taking place. That indicates a player base larger than a purely informal expatriate circle. Uzbekistan still looks like a developing cricket country, but it now has enough club visibility to suggest a broader grassroots layer is being assembled.
Cricket’s place in Uzbekistan today
Cricket’s place in Uzbekistan today is still emerging, but it is much more substantial than in many other new markets. Associate membership, a functioning federation, tournament evidence, and recent entry into the Asian Cricket Council all point to a sport that is trying to institutionalize itself rather than merely survive. Cricket remains far from the center of Uzbek sporting culture, but that is not the right benchmark yet. The more relevant question is whether the game has achieved enough structure to keep expanding, and the answer appears to be yes. Uzbekistan looks like one of Central Asia’s most promising new cricket projects.
