South Sudan is one of the world’s newest countries, having gained independence in 2011, so any national cricket story there would also be recent. In this search, I was not able to verify ICC membership or a clearly established official governing structure through primary cricket sources. There are, however, scattered signs that a cricket community exists, including a Facebook presence for a South Sudan Cricket Board. That points to a sport that may be trying to organize itself, but it does not yet provide the kind of verifiable national framework that would justify describing South Sudan as an established cricket country.
Who plays cricket in South Sudan
The available evidence suggests that cricket in South Sudan, if active on the ground, is likely carried by small community networks rather than by a broad domestic system. In countries with limited infrastructure and no visible ICC-linked body, cricket often survives through personal initiative, school or neighborhood play, and diaspora ties. That seems the safest way to understand South Sudan as well. It would be overstating things to describe a deep club pyramid or a strong national competition. The more accurate picture is a very small sport sustained by enthusiasts trying to create local continuity.
Cricket’s place in South Sudan today
Cricket’s place in South Sudan appears marginal and still formative. Unlike football or basketball, it does not seem to have crossed into broad public visibility. The signs of a board-like structure are real enough to suggest intent, but not enough to prove a mature national game. So the best description is a cautious one: cricket may exist in South Sudan as a small emerging community sport, but the publicly verifiable evidence for a larger national structure is still thin.
