Cricket in Solomon Islands is best described today as a sport in recovery rather than one with a continuous modern structure. ABC Pacific reported in September 2025 that the game had largely faded from view in recent years before a revival began under the Solomon Islands Cricket Federation. That framing matters because it suggests cricket has a history in the islands, but not one that translated into steady recent visibility. The story is therefore less about long institutional continuity and more about rebuilding a sport that had slipped well behind the country’s leading games.
Who plays cricket in Solomon Islands
The current player base appears to be centered on the revival effort led by the Solomon Islands Cricket Federation rather than on a long-established mass club network. The federation’s official site presents itself as the organization leading the revival, promotion, and growth of cricket across the islands, while the Solomon Islands National Sports Council reported in February 2026 that the federation had registered for 2026 and was already running skills sessions at the national institute of sport. That suggests the sport is presently being built through organized development work, coaching, and federation-led activity rather than through a broad legacy of strong domestic competition.
Cricket’s place in Solomon Islands today
Cricket is not one of the country’s dominant sports, and even the recent reporting around its revival says that clearly. Still, the current moment looks more promising than the recent past. The federation has a public presence, a national-sports-council relationship, and an openly stated ambition to move toward ICC recognition. That does not make Solomon Islands a formed cricket country yet. It does, however, make it a country where cricket is actively being rebuilt. For a smaller Pacific nation, that is a meaningful step: the sport now has organization, intent, and at least the beginnings of a pathway forward.
