Cricket in Mexico has older roots than many people expect. The ICC’s Mexico member page ties the game’s history to Reforma Athletic Club, which became a long-term home for the Mexico Cricket Association, and Mexico has been part of the ICC structure since first joining as an affiliate in 2004 before becoming an associate member in 2017. That gives Mexican cricket a longer institutional story than many newer developing markets in the Americas.
Who plays cricket in Mexico
Mexico’s cricket base is broader than just one expatriate circle. The Mexico Cricket Association says it runs league play plus women’s and junior development programs, and that it has expanded beyond the Mexico City area into Guadalajara, Monterrey, Querétaro, and Cancún. Recent Reuters reporting also showed how the association has tried to widen cricket’s reach through social and development projects, including its award-winning prison program.
Cricket’s place in Mexico today
Cricket is still a secondary sport in Mexico, but it now has enough structure to be more than symbolic. The ICC recognizes Mexico as an associate member, the MCA runs a National Cricket Championship, and the national team has an active T20I record. That does not make cricket mainstream in Mexican sporting life, but it does make Mexico one of the clearer growth stories in the Americas region.
