Cricket in Greece

Cricket in Greece - culture, history, and development.

Cricket in Greece has an unusually specific historical home: Corfu. The ICC says cricket first appeared there in 1823 in a match between British naval officers and the garrison, during the period of British influence over the Ionian Islands. The same source traces the growth of local clubs through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and notes the creation of the Hellenic Cricket Federation in 1997. Greece is therefore not a country where cricket is simply a recent migrant import; it has a genuine local tradition, even if that tradition is geographically narrow.

    Who plays cricket in Greece

Greek cricket is still centered heavily on Corfu. The Hellenic Cricket Federation’s own site is based there, and ICC’s Greece page emphasizes that cricket in schools on Corfu has been a major part of junior development. That creates a different social base from what you see in many European countries. Rather than depending mainly on newer expatriate communities, Greek cricket rests on a long-standing island culture, junior development, and club continuity, though it remains a minor sport nationally.

    Cricket’s place in Greece today

Cricket remains marginal in Greece as a whole, but it has real institutional life. ICC still lists Greece as a member, and in 2025 the Hellenic Cricket Federation was named the Europe regional winner for ICC Development Initiative of the Year. That suggests a sport with limited national visibility but meaningful organizational progress. Greece is not a broad cricket country, yet Corfu gives it a distinctive and authentic cricket identity that few European nations can match.
