Cricket in Cyprus

Cricket in Cyprus followed a distinctive path. The ICC says the island did not take up the game during colonial rule in the same way as other Commonwealth territories. Instead, cricket was brought mainly by the British military stationed there after the Second World War, and for years it stayed largely within the British bases. The later expansion of the expatriate community in the 1980s and the arrival of Asian workers in the early 2000s helped turn the game from a base-centered activity into a wider local cricket culture. Cyprus joined the ICC in 1999.

    Who plays cricket in Cyprus

The player base in Cyprus is broader than the island’s early military-cricket origins might suggest. The ICC describes growth through expatriate communities and Asian workers, while more recent coverage has highlighted participants from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. Cyprus also has returning Cypriots who grew up in cricket countries such as Australia and South Africa. That mix gives the game a hybrid identity: part military legacy, part migrant community sport, and part local development project.

    Cricket’s place in Cyprus today

Cyprus has one of the clearer cricket structures among smaller European markets. The Cyprus Cricket Federation is the national governing body, the country has been in the ICC since 1999, and the federation is hosting the ICC Men’s 2028 T20 World Cup Europe Sub Regional Qualifier A in May 2026 in Limassol district. Cricket is still far behind football in national visibility, but Cyprus has moved well beyond the stage of occasional informal play. In European associate terms, it is a real and functioning cricket country.
