Cricket in Costa Rica

Cricket in Costa Rica - culture, history, and development.

Cricket in Costa Rica has a stronger history than many people would expect. The ICC says the game was first played there in the late nineteenth century, introduced by Jamaicans who arrived in the 1880s to work on the railway from Limón to San José. In its earlier high point, the sport had major strength in Limón province, where the ICC notes there were 46 teams in the 1930s. After a long decline, cricket resumed more visibly in Central America from the 1970s onward, giving Costa Rica a story built on both deep roots and later revival.

Who plays cricket in Costa Rica

The social base of Costa Rican cricket has historically been strongest in Limón and among communities linked to Afro-Caribbean migration. That remains important, but the game’s modern base is wider than a single historical community. The ICC notes that the federation was formed in 2000, the country joined the ICC in 2002, and youth development later expanded into more than 100 educational establishments by 2014. Women’s cricket also gained institutional attention through the founding of a Women’s Cricket Association in 2014.

Cricket’s place in Costa Rica today

Cricket remains a secondary sport in Costa Rica, but it has a real national structure. The ICC records the Costa Rica Cricket Federation as the governing body, notes the Costa Rica league was founded in 2005, and describes the country as a founder member of the Central American Championships. That does not put cricket near football in national prominence, but it does place the sport beyond the level of a purely symbolic pastime. Costa Rica’s cricket identity is modest, organized, and historically richer than its public profile might suggest.
