Cricket in Belgium

Belgium has a deeper cricket history than many assume. Cricket Belgium notes that an earlier governing body existed in the early twentieth century before disappearing during the Second World War, while the current Belgian Cricket Federation was founded in 1990. The ICC recognizes Belgium as a member, and the country sits inside the ICC Europe structure. That makes Belgium different from places where cricket is only a recent community import. The modern Belgian game is still mostly an Associate-level sport, but it rests on both historical roots and a rebuilt contemporary federation.

Who plays cricket in Belgium

The Belgian player base is wider than a single expatriate niche. The federation presents itself as a national governing body that organizes league cricket, promotes the game in schools, and supports development opportunities across ages and backgrounds. Belgium also has visible women’s and junior structures. Cricket Belgium’s women’s page describes local fixtures against youth teams and women’s teams from around Europe, while federation materials describe junior leagues and academy activity across several cities. That suggests cricket in Belgium is sustained by clubs, families, junior players, migrants, and longer-term local organizers together rather than by one narrow community alone.

Cricket’s place in Belgium today

Cricket in Belgium is still outside the country’s main sports conversation, but it is clearly structured. The federation says it runs national league competitions, academy programs, and development work, and its official site now emphasizes league play, insurance, and support systems for member clubs. Belgium also benefits from being part of a large ICC Europe region with established competition routes. So while cricket remains a minority sport in Belgian public life, it is organized enough to be more than symbolic. Belgium is one of the stronger continental European cricket countries outside the best-known Associate powers.
